French Fried is "lively and hilarious" - 9-star French chef Alain Ducasse
Harriet's second book, French Fried, The Culinary Capers of an American in Paris, is a food memoir, the story of how her culinary expertise progressed from opening a can of peas to whipping up two four-course meals a day, thanks to tips from her very French and very generous mother-in-law. Harriet combines her surprise sprinkled personal tale with a journalist's investigation into the world of French cuisine based on interviews and tastings with some of France's foremost sommeliers, bread makers, and cheese purveyors. Alain Ducasse's top sommelier, Gerard Margeon, initiated her into the world of champagne with a tasting at the Ritz; master baker Michel Moisan demonstrated his "feel for the dough" in the basement of his shop in the 14th arrondissement ; veteran cheese expert and "affineur" Philippe Alléosse invited her to his cheese cellar deep under the ground in the heart of Paris.
